NFM Lending

When home buyers ask ChatGPT and Google AI Mode which mortgage lender to use, how often is NFM the answer? 119 live answers to 12 buyer questions, what they show, and what to do about it.

October 7, 2026
First measurement

The short version. NFM is a real contender in Maryland. It is named in 38 of 99 answers to questions that don't mention it, and it is the top or co-top name for "best lender in Maryland" (9 of 10) and "best lender in Baltimore" (8 of 10). Anyone who asks about NFM by name gets a confident answer (20 of 20).

The gaps are specific. NFM is absent from every answer about the Washington DC area, about which lender has the best customer reviews, and about local versus online lenders. Google AI Mode is much weaker for NFM than ChatGPT on first-time buyer and FHA questions. Each gap points to a fix, listed below.

What we measured

We asked ChatGPT and Google AI Mode 12 questions a Maryland home buyer would really ask, 5 fresh answers per question on each, and recorded every lender each answer named and every website it cited. Ten questions are unbranded (they never mention NFM). Two are branded lookups. The unbranded result is the honest measure of discovery.

How the assistants describe NFM when they name it: "Gold-tier Maryland Mortgage Program lender," "major Maryland lender with very strong local customer ratings," "strong local alternative," and "large local lender" near Fort Meade. The description is good. The problem is reach, not reputation.

NFM is strong on

  • Maryland-wide and Baltimore "best lender" questions
  • Maryland Mortgage Program, where it is described as a Gold-tier lender
  • ChatGPT answers for first-time buyers and FHA loans
  • Its own name: every branded answer is accurate and positive

NFM is invisible on

  • The Washington DC area (0 of 10)
  • "Best customer reviews" (0 of 9), despite its review count
  • Military buyers near Fort Meade (2 of 10)
  • Google AI Mode for first-time buyers and FHA (1 of 10)

Where the answers get their facts

Every answer cites websites. These are the most-cited across all 469 citations. This is the list of places NFM needs to appear for the assistants to repeat it.

Two things stand out. The state's Maryland Mortgage Program site is the second most-cited source, used on 7 of the 12 questions. Assistants are reading its lender list to decide who to name. And nfmlending.com was cited only 13 times, mostly its homepage. Only 2 citations went to its VA page and 2 to its reviews page. The site is not yet giving the assistants pages they can quote for specific questions.

Six moves to raise it

In priority order. Each one is tied to a result above, and each will show up as a before-and-after on these same 12 questions.

Turn 81,000 five-star reviews into an answer the assistants can cite Biggest gap

NFM appeared in 0 of 9 answers to "which mortgage lender has the best customer reviews," which went to Veterans United, Chase and Rocket. Those answers lean on J.D. Power, ConsumerAffairs, BBB and editorial sites. NFM's reviews live mostly on Experience.com and Zillow, which these answers do not cite.

  • Publish one dated, plain-language reviews page: total reviews, average rating, rating by platform, with review schema markup.
  • Ask Bankrate, NerdWallet and U.S. News to review NFM; together they drew 63 citations here.
  • Grow the BBB and ConsumerAffairs profiles, which these answers do read.
Evidence: reviews question 0/9 · bankrate + nerdwallet + usnews = 63 citations

Claim the Washington DC area Big market

0 of 10 DC-area answers named NFM. Navy Federal, Atlantic Coast Mortgage, Prosperity Home Mortgage and Capital Bank took the answers. NFM is next door in Linthicum, but nothing tells the assistants it serves DC, Montgomery County, Prince George's County or Northern Virginia.

  • Build a page for each nearby branch and county, with loan officers, addresses and local programs (DC Open Doors, Montgomery County MPDU, Virginia Housing).
  • Make sure every DC-area branch has a complete Google Business Profile with reviews.
Evidence: DC question 0/10 on both assistants

Close the Google AI Mode gap on first-time buyers and FHA

ChatGPT named NFM in 9 of 10 first-time buyer and FHA answers. Google AI Mode named it in 1 of 10 and picked First Home Mortgage, PNC, Rocket and New American Funding instead. Google AI Mode leans on Google's own index and maps: google.com alone was 128 citations.

  • Give first-time buyers and FHA their own Maryland pages on nfmlending.com, with the steps, the credit and down payment rules, and a dated FAQ.
  • Fill out Google Business Profiles with the services "FHA loans" and "first-time home buyer programs," and add posts and Q&A on them.
Evidence: ChatGPT 9/10 vs Google AI Mode 1/10 on the same two questions

Lead the Maryland Mortgage Program list

mmp.maryland.gov is the second most-cited site (55 citations on 7 questions). NFM already shows up as a Gold-tier MMP lender, but only in 6 of 10 MMP answers, behind First Home Mortgage. Keep that tier, and publish an MMP page on nfmlending.com that names the programs (1st Time Advantage, Partner Match, SmartBuy), the current assistance amounts, and NFM's MMP loan count.

Evidence: mmp.maryland.gov #2 source · MMP question 6/10

Win military buyers at Fort Meade

Fort Meade is minutes from NFM's headquarters, yet NFM was named in 2 of 10 VA answers. Navy Federal, Veterans United and Bay Capital won. NFM has a VA program (NFM Salute), but the assistants cited its VA pages only 3 times.

  • Publish a "VA loans near Fort Meade" page that links NFM Salute, local VA loan officers and closings near the base.
  • Get listed with military relocation and PCS resources the answers already read.
Evidence: Fort Meade VA question 2/10 · NFM VA pages cited 3 times

Answer the questions nobody owns: rates, and local versus online

On "lowest rates in Maryland" and "local or online lender," few lenders were named at all. The answers came from Bankrate, SafeRate, NerdWallet and WSJ. NFM's best argument is local, in-house service, and that is exactly what the "local vs online" question asks about. A reviewer also noted that NFM does not post rates online.

  • Publish a short, dated "local lender vs online lender" explainer with NFM's own numbers: average days to close, in-house underwriting, review score.
  • Publish sample Maryland rates with a date and assumptions, even if they are only indicative.
Evidence: local-vs-online 0/10 · lowest-rates 3/10 · editorial sites dominate both

What happens next

The same 12 questions now run every week on both assistants, so each change NFM makes shows up against this baseline. Single answers change from day to day. Read trends over about four weeks, not one run.
